April

During the run up to the general election we need your help.

It is important that prospective candidates know that the campaign against ID cards and the database state has strong local support. You can help us do this by mentioning your concerns to candidates who knock on your door or at any hustings you attend*.

We would be very grateful for volunteers to help hand out leaflets and gather signatures at our next stall, which will be held on Saturday 17th April by St Michael’s Tower on Cornmarket St from 12 – 2pm. This will be our last stall before election day and we want to make as many people as possible aware of the arguments against the ID card scheme. If you would like to help you can either contact us beforehand or turn up on the day.

Our next meeting will be held at the Mitre on the High Street on Thursday 13th May from 8pm. We will have a drink and a chat about the election results and future events. Everyone is welcome.

* There is a hustings being held by POWER2010 at the East Oxford Community Centre on the 14th April at 7pm.

March Events

Our monthly stall will be held on Saturday 27 March. As usual, we’ll meet up by St Michael’s Tower on Cornmarket St at 11am and be there for a couple of hours talking to people and gathering signatures. Following on from this our regular pub meeting will be held at the Mitre on the High Street on Thursday 1 April from 8pm. We will have a drink and a chat about campaigning opportunities in the run up to the general election – everyone is welcome.

Finally, I would like to thank Chris for the great work he has done for the Oxford group over the past couple of years.

Next Stall and Meeting

Our stall will be next Saturday (27 Feb). As usual, we’ll meet up by St Michael’s Tower on Cornmarket St at 11am and be there for a couple of hours talking to people and gathering signatures.  Following on from this we’ll be meeting up for our regular pub meeting at the Mitre on the High Street on Thursday 4 March from 8pm.

As mentioned previously, I’m going to be standing down as chair of the group since I’m going to be out of the country for most of the summer. Jim Wise and Sarah Fish are going to step into the breach to run the group jointly.  We’ll be phasing in this change over the next few months.

February’s Meeting and Stall

January’s meeting was called off due to the poor weather making travelling difficult.  Our meeting for next month will be on Thursday 4 February at the Mitre, High St, Oxford from 8pm. We’ll talk about what events we’ll be holding in the run up to the general election. We will also talk about who is going to chair the group in future. I am going to be out of the country for almost 3 months in the summer, so whatever happens in the election someone will need to step into my shoes for at least some of this year.

Following on from this, we will have our regular stall in Cornmarket St Oxford on Saturday 6 February. As usual we’ll meet at St Michaels Tower at 11am and run the stall for a couple of hours or so.

December’s Events

Our regular monthly meeting will be on Thursday 3 December at the Mitre, High St, Oxford from 8pm. As usual, we’ll meet for a chat and to plan further events.  Since this is the last one of the year I guess we’ll look back at what we did in 2009, which included a public meeting, a trip to Manchester, a film showing and helping out a comedy gig.

Prior to this, we’ll be doing yet another stall in Cornmarket St. This will be on Saturday 28 November from 11am.  We’ll meet at St Michael’s Tower and run the stall for a couple of hours.  Come along and lend a hand!

Guy Herbert in Oxford

Guy Herbert, General Secretary of NO2ID, spoke at an event in Oxford last month, hosted by the Oxford Libertarian Society.  A video of his talk “The Birth of the Database State” is available on their site.

November’s Events

As usual, we’ll be meeting on the first Thursday of the month at the Mitre on the High Street in Oxford, which this month is 5 November.  “V for Vendetta” masks optional! We’ll be there from 8pm for an hour or so.

Following on from this, we’ll be running our monthly stall two days later on Saturday 7 November in Cornmarket St.  Meet up by St Michaels Tower from 11am.  We aim to run the stall for a couple of hours.

Our next pub meeting will be on Thursday 1 October, from 8pm at the Mitre on the High Street. Our monthly street stall will be happening the weekend after on Saturday 3 October. Our last couple of stalls have suffered from the sheer number of other stalls on Cornmarket Street. So this time we may try pitching up somewhere else. We will meet up at Carfax tower at 11am and choose a spot shortly after. If you fancy lending a hand drop an email to oxford at no2id.net and I can ensure we don’t miss you.

Later on in the month (Saturday 17th) we are planning to take a day trip up to Manchester to join several other groups in a coordinated day of action. If you are interested in this, again drop me an email at oxford at no2id.net.

September’s Events

In September we’ll be having our monthly meeting on the traditional first Thursday of the month. That’s 3 September. So we’ll be in the Mitre on the High Street from 8pm for an hour or so for a chat and to discuss the campaign.

We’ll be having a stall in Cornmarket Street the Saturday before, which will be 29 August. We usually meet by St Michael’s tower and we’ll be there from 11am for a couple of hours. Lets hope for some better weather than the soggy stall at the start of August!

August’s Activities

We’ll be having our monthly stall on Saturday 1 August in Cornmarket Street from 11am for a couple of hours. This will be our first opportunity to make sure the public knows that the Government is pressing ahead with the identity scheme, despite what they may have heard in the press. Following on from this, we’ll be having our monthly pub meeting on Thursday 6 August at the Mitre on the High Street from 8pm. All welcome!
